SJHA/SNOKING JOINT MIDGET ELITE TEAM NAMES COACH/GM

SJHA/SNOKING JOINT MIDGET ELITE TEAM NAMES COACH/GM

By Andrew Birnbrich, Jr. Thunderbirds Staff Writer                                                                       4/17/2017

The SnoKing & Seattle Junior Amateur Hockey Associations are pleased to announce that former NHL Scout and AHL General Manager, Mike Butters has accepted the Head Coach / GM position with the Jr. Thunderbirds Midget Elite team for the 2017-18 season, SKAHA Hockey Director, Doug Kirton, announced today.

BUTTERS HAS EXPERIENCE AT ALL ELITE LEVELS OF HOCKEY

Butters joins the Jr. Thunderbirds with impressive hockey credentials. He has worked in the NHL as a professional scout for the Tampa Bay Lightning and also served as the club’s General Manager of Tampa’s minor league system, including their AHL affiliate. He has owned, operated and coached at the junior level in both the NAHL and AWHL. His junior teams have captured 11 league titles, a national championship and set the USA Hockey record for winning percentage (.874) over a 10-year span. Kirton says after an extensive search of qualified candidates, Butters was the right fit for their midget elite program. “Mike comes to our group as a player, coach and GM who has succeeded at every level he’s been at. We were looking for a coach who has worked at the higher levels of hockey and could use that experience and knowledge to prepare our players for that advancement.” Kirton added, “After meeting with Mike and hearing his vision for our elite midget program, we knew it was the right fit.”

COACH CITES SJHA/SNOKING PARTNERSHIP AS KEY TO SUCCESS

Butters said there were a number of factors in basing his decision. “First and foremost, my family loves living here. I wasn’t interested in getting back into high level coaching just for the sake of it. My wife has a job she loves here and my two daughters are heavily involved in youth sports here. Moving was not an option. The other main factor was association support. I have seen so many programs come and go because they are built from the top down. These programs don’t last. After meeting with SnoKing and SJHA, I was confident that they had the infrastructure to not only provide a top-notch program for the elite midget team, but have a solid base of players from within the organization to draw from. This region desperately needs collaboration for the benefit of the elite players. I commend both SJHA and SnoKing’s effort towards that. The combination of the areas top two associations for both the 16U and 14U teams is fantastic.

NEW MIDGET ELITE COACH SHARED SEASON PLAN

When we caught up with Mike, via phone, he was openly excited about getting started. The coach said the team will play in the top flight of the Pacific Coast League and commit to 5-6 key tournaments as the backbone of their season. He also indicated that he has already laid plans to play exhibition games vs. both Major Midget and Academy teams nearby, to round out their schedule.  “I have always felt that teams at the bantam and midget levels travel far too much to play what they feel is better competition. We won’t do that. It is far too tasking on our players time away from school and rest to practice and game schedule. We have already been accepted into two of the top tournaments for our level in the US. These tournaments are attended by USHL, NAHL and college coaches, scouts and recruiters. Our group will be seen plenty.”

FLEXIBILITY OF SCHEDULE DEEMED VITAL BY NEW COACH

The coach said that his team’s ability to select their own schedule, coupled with a 28 game schedule in Canada is key to showcasing his players. “We are going to be selective as to what tournaments we will play. In speaking with my many colleagues at the NCAA, USHL and junior levels, they have conveyed to me where we should play for the most exposure. I used to be in a league (NAHL) where you were locked into a showcase schedule against the same teams with the same scouts. It wasn’t something that benefitted our players greatly.” Butters added, “Playing in BC (PCAHA) will insure our players are seen by BCHL and WHL teams. Playing in the tournaments we designate as important will showcase our players to a greater number of teams and scouts. Add to that we will be able to accomplish this at a cost that is up to $8,000.00 less than similar teams in the area, and it makes for successful planning.”

TRYOUTS BEGIN APRIL 24

SnoKing’s Hockey Director, Doug Kirton, has said that tryouts have been scheduled for the week of April 24th. They will be held at both SJHA and SnoKing rinks. Tryouts have been posted at on the SnoKing website.
